Squash 2000 Berlin: a ladder that keeps the community active season after season

Squash 2000, Bezirk Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, 13 jul 2026

Squash 2000 is an established squash club in the heart of Berlin with five courts. In a mature sport where retention is everything, the club keeps its players active with the ClubMatch ladder: more than 100 players every season and around 700 matches in the past year. Proof that a well-run ladder keeps a squash community alive.

"Squash lives from the people who keep coming back to the court. The ladder does exactly that: everyone always has a next opponent at their own level, and that keeps our community active season after season." Volker Wegener, Squash 2000

The challenge: retaining players in a mature sport

Squash is a mature, stable sport. For a club, the job is therefore less about constantly finding new members and more about keeping the players you already have active and engaged, across every level. The risk in any established club is quiet attrition: a few uneven matches, a heavy loss one week, a walkover the next, and a player comes by less and less until they stop altogether.

The solution: the ClubMatch ladder

Squash 2000 runs a ladder through ClubMatch that gives every player a position to defend and a next opponent to challenge, always at their own level. That turns "I should play again sometime" into "I have a challenge to play this week," exactly the behaviour that fills the courts.

How it works in practice

Instead of leaving players to organise their own matches, ClubMatch handles the matchmaking. A player enters their result, sees where they stand on the ladder and lines up the next challenge against someone at their level. Beginners are not thrown in at the deep end, and stronger players are still tested. Better matched games mean more enjoyment, and more enjoyment keeps the courts busy.

The results

The numbers show a large, active community. In the past year around 700 matches were played on the Squash 2000 ladder, with more than 100 players each season, and all of that on five courts. Across the year more than 130 different players took part. For an established club in a stable market, that is a remarkable level of regular, recurring activity, season after season.

Why it matters for other clubs

Squash 2000 shows what a well-run ladder is worth in a mature market. Where new players are hard to find, the clubs that win are the ones that keep the players they already have playing, and the most reliable way to do that is to make every match fair, competitive and balanced. A ladder that delivers games at the right level turns occasional players into regulars and keeps the courts busy all year round. For any squash club that wants to keep its community active, Squash 2000 is proof that a running ladder is the engine of a lively club.
